Grenache

One of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world, Grenache (or Garnacha) ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain. Grenache is also grown on the Italian island of Sardinia, in the south of France, in Australia, and in California‘s Monterey AVA and San Joaquin Valley.

History Of Grenache

Grenache or Garnacha (as it is known in Spain) most likely originated in the region of Aragon in northern Spain, according to ampelographic evidence. While Grenache Noir was first planted in Rustenberg in 2001, this wine is a brand-new addition to the regional range and South Africa’s grape population as a whole.

How Grenache Is Distilled

Being typically light in colour, low in tannin and medium-bodied, Grenache is the ideal red wine to drink on its own or to pair with tapas style foods and cured meats.
