Wine Notes from the Goodfellows Experts

Wine Notes from the Goodfellows Experts

CONSTANTIA GLEN, one of the many beautiful jewels in South Africa’s vinous crown, has just triumphed at both the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London, as well as topping the scales on Tim Atkin’s 2017 South African Special Report

Originally part of Simon Van Der Stel’s vast Constania farm, this property has changed hands several times and has oscillated between fruit and cattle farming since its proud winemaking beginnings in 1685.  Known as Benydendal, and then later as Klein Benydendal, it flick-flacked between owners until finally resting in the capable hands of the Waibel family in 1995.  In 2000 the vines were replanted and the property reclaimed its status as a boutique winery.

The property’s location, high up on the neck of the Constantiaberg, affords it a unique micro-climate with specific mention of the altitude which allows them just that little bit of extra sunlight during the ripening period.  It makes for slow, gentle ripening high up on the slopes, resulting in beautifully balanced fruit.  The wines are elegant, pure, bright, and delicious.

Winemaker Justin Van Wyk pays careful attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar, and the wines grow in stature with every vintage.  They produce two Bordeaux style red blends: Constantia Glen Five (which embodies all five of the Bordeaux grape varieties) and then Constantia Glen Three (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc).  Two whites in the form of a  Sauvignon Blanc with the tiniest dash of Semillon added – it’s a bright, juicy white wine  with lovely fresh acidity,   and then the Constantia Glen Two   which is an oaked Sauvignon Blanc (70%) / Semillon (30%) blend which is the delicious wine that Tim Atkin awarded top honours to in his most recent assessment of SA wines.

All these wines are available at our stores countrywide and if you are looking for a wine that will enhance any occasion, make you feel special, or make somebody else feel spoilt, do yourself a favour and stock up on a few of each!
