Mix with the best of them: Cocktails that bring out your whisky
We’ve spoken previously about how to get your start in the world of whisky and the best food pairings for your choice bottle of whisky. But today, let’s take a look at another facet of whisky – mixology (mixing drinks), specifically for single malt whisky, like those produced by Glenlivet.
So, why is whisky so great for mixing with drinks like cocktails? It’s because of its complexity and flavour. Whisky combined with the right spirits can be suitable for any occasion you can think of. Try out some of these cocktail recipes!
Ye Old Fashioned Cocktail
Make this old fashioned cocktail with an intense smoothness that is both silky and smooth to drink. Add to it a spike of citrus and you have a drinking experience of yesteryear.
In a glass on the rocks, mix bitters, water and a sugar cube, muddle the bitters and water into the sugar cube with a teaspoon. Fill the glass with more ice cubes and add in 50ml of the French Oak whisky. Finish off with an orange peel.
The Whisky Sour
The whisky sour has been a staple cocktail across the globe and what makes it truly different is the addition of an egg white into the mix to give it a frothy head. Let’s breakdown what this awesome cocktail is all about.
- 40ml The Glenlivet 18 YR whisky
- 20ml Apple Liqueur
- 10ml fresh lemon juice
- 10ml fresh lime juice
- 10ml egg white
- Dash sugar syrup
- Dash bitters
Put everything together in cocktail shaker and shake well with ice. Strain the drink into a glass and finish off with an apple crisp for garnish.
The Good Ol’ Rusty Nail
When you think of poker nights and your old man, him and his friends were most probably drinking this concoction. Tales tell of this drink originating during the 1930s, but it had become commonplace by the 1960s. So, how do you go about making this golden oldie?
Make sure your glass is on the rocks, add in the whiskey, Drambuie and then the bitters if you’d like. Stir the drink thoroughly and serve.
