Snippets from Carrie’s Desk

Very interesting interview with Takuan von Arnim (son of Achim von Arnim) on Classic Wine this week.  Don’t forget to listen on FM 102.7 this Friday at 18h00, DSTV channel 857.

Haute Cabriere Chardonnay / Pinot Noir is arguably one of the biggest success stories in the South African wine industry.  There is hardly a restaurant winelist countrywide that does not sport this much loved label in either ‘BY THE GLASS’ or ‘BY THE BOTTLE’ form.  And with good reason:  it is infinitely quaffable, refreshingly summer-crisp and well-priced all at the same time.  It is – undoubtedly – the signature stamp of the legendary character that is Achim Von Arnim.

However, this week I caught up with Takuan – his son.  It can’t have been easy following in such huge footsteps, but I was so pleasantly surprised to spend some time with this easy, confident (yet modest), intelligent, fun, hipster who has taken over from his dad in the cellar.  He has spent a good couple of years as the sorcerer’s apprentice, flying quietly under the radar whilst learning his trade.  Now he has created his own alchemy in the form of a HAUTE CABRIERE CHARDONNAY RESERVE.  A furtive yet well thought out plan that culminated in a tiny bottling of a sublime chardonnay that has cleverly put Takuan firmly in control of his own stamp on this famous Franschhoek cellar.

It’s in really short supply and only available from his cellar door.  He did, however, promise me a very tiny allocation for some of our chardonnay loyal customers.  I think it will be available in store in the next week.

Make a diary note to give Pete a call at the Illovo store to check on availability – or better still, ask if you can reserve a bottle or two to try.  I can assure you, you will not be disappointed.

HAPPY SIPPING!
