Steenberg Vineyards Historical Background
The Steenberg Vineyards at one time had an even more striking name, “Swaaneweide”- The Feeding Place of Swans. Bought in 1682 by the fate stricken Catherine Michelse, who after the death of several husbands, appealed to the Cape Governor Simon van der Stel for a plot of land at the base of the Ou Kaapse Weg. He leased her 25 morgen and in 1688 issued her with the legal title deed and the mandate to sow and cultivate the land.
It was in 1695 that Frederik Russouw bought the farm, built a new U shaped house and officially started the wholesale production of wines at Steenberg Vineyards.
It was in April 2005 that Graham Beck’s Kangra Group bought Steenberg Hotel and Steenberg Winery.
Steenberg Vineyards has undergone extensive soil testing in order to perfect the vineyards production. There are about 63 ha of vineyards with 45% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon, the rest is made up of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Steenberg Winery is also one of the only vineyards in the Cape to have the red Nebbiolo variety.
