The Society hosts a tasting event once a month in Jo’burg and once every 2 months in Cape Town. Members pay less than non-members, but everyone is welcome. The events are hosted by whisky connoisseurs who guide the informative tasting and food pairings.

A curious society, for curious whisky lovers.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, founded in Edinburgh in 1983, is a membership organisation which bottles and sells single cask, single malt whisky. It purchases individual casks from more than 125 malt whisky distilleries in Scotland and throughout the world, bottles them and retails directly to its members. It also runs private members’ rooms in South Africa and other international locations.
We’ve got the bottle.
Casks are only acquired by the Society after approval by an appointed ‘Tasting Panel’, comprising Society representatives and various other suitably qualified parties. These casks are then bottled, with each bottle given a whimsical set of tasting notes which provide an indication of what flavours and textures the drinker can expect. The number of bottles available from each outturn of a cask can vary – but single casks by their very nature only produce a limited amount of whisky so each release is rare and sought-after.

To buy whisky bottled by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, it is necessary to be a member. New members receive a membership pack containing sample bottles of Society whisky and various other items including a members’ handbook and note book, a lapel badge and membership card. Members can also enjoy Unfiltered, our quarterly magazine, use of a members tasting lounge and tastings at exclusive venues.
