The History of Simonsvlei
Simonsvlei was established in 1945 by a collaboration of leading grape farmers. Named after the Simon van der Stel, the 17th century Cape Governor, and the area vlei?s, Simonsvlei was the combined vision of several men. With its unique locations with cool micro climates and maritime breezes it was the perfect location to begin growing quality grapes and producing exceptional wines.
After the hardships of World War 2 the farmers of the area decided that they would join together and produce a larger quantity of quality wine that was still affordable to the common man. Possessed by the innovation and determination of their time the farmers vision of quality, affordable wine is one of Simonsvlei?s defining goals.
Built on the integrity of its co founders like Sonny le Roux and the subsequent experience and knowledge of its other partners like Oom Sarel, Simonsvlei has grown in leaps and bounds and now stands shoulder to shoulder with greats of South African wine production.
Today Simonsvlei?s wine grape production is 9000 metric tons that is delivered by 36 different wine farms and its varieties extend to that of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.
