Rijk?s Private Cellar History
The 136 hectares of virgin soil that was to be Rijk?s Private Cellar was bought by Neville Dorrington and his family. They had been working Cape Town for 2 decades before they decided that buying a wine farm was what they truly wanted. They searched for the perfect setting and found it in the Tulbagh valley.
A barrage of soil tests were undertaken and it was found to have excellent drainage and its east, weat, north and south slopes were ideal for producing low yield high quality grapes. They bought the farm and named it Rijk?s Private cellar, in honour of the Cape Governor from 1751 to 1771, Rijk Tulbagh.
The development of Rijk?s Private Cellar began in the May of 1996. The first 14 hectares of vines were planted in July 1997, with a further 12 hectares being planted the year following that. It was in 2000 that Rijk?s Private Cellar released their first wines.
