Reyneke Wine Farm
Johan Reyneke Jr. started running the family farm, Uitzight, when he took over the reins from his mother, in 1998. This 40ha farm faces Stellenbosch and enjoys panoramic and sweeping views of the majestic mountains and False Bay.
Johan farms organically and all his wines are produced with biodynamic principles; Johan is one of the few winemakers who produces wines using this method and is perceived as being a pioneer regarding the way he makes and produces his fine wines.
The vines are forty years old and the soil has early period Stone Age hand axes; thus Johan believes that the farm should keep and nurture its originality and uniqueness, and intends to farm his land with as little interference and chemical intrusion as possible.
Activities at Reyneke Wines
Farming techniques are mostly organic where the assumption is that farmers will be able to produce and enhance their crops by re-enforcing defenses against pests whilst producing crops that are of an excellent and high standard through this method.
Weeds and the eradication of weeds is a good example of how organic farmers view the growing of their crops; the moon and tides is also taken into account when growing vines organically. Through the centuries farmers developed a certain wisdom regarding sowing, pruning and harvesting in synchronization with the moon and the location of the heavens and stars.
