Place In The Sun Wine Farm
We have been treated to a new range of wines by producer-wholesaler Distell, called a Place in the Sun, this collection features a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the 2010 vintage, as well as a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. Deon Boshoff, the cellarmaster at Adam Tas cellars in Stellenbosch, was involved with the creation of these wines. Boshoff, who is himself the son of farm workers, grew up on an apple farm in Elgin. He was able to study winemaking with a bursary which is available to the children of farm workers. Now 32, he has been making wines for the past 10 years and was appointed to his present position as cellarmaster in 2010.
Consumers are bound to lap up these wines with the sun-motif on their labels. You will probably be able to get them at Pick’nPay outlets in the not too distant fugure. The grapes are sourced from some of the Cape’s premier wine-growing regions. These wines are bold and rich in flavour but easy to drink, refreshing and soft on the palate.
Says Deon Boshoff “The initiative is based on trade rather than aid, and is intended to make a material difference to the workers involved. When the people who are growing and harvesting the grapes know they are a valued and integral part of winemaking, they take extra care and it shows in the quality of the grapes”
At the inaugural “100 Women -100 Wines” in which 100 South African women chose a range of 10 wines for 10 different occasions 3 of the 4 wines in the Place in the Sun range were loved by the ladies.
