Meerendal Wine Estate
Meerendal Estate dates back to 1702 when Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel granted the farm to Jan Meerland. From that date it took widow Christine Stans 12 years to successfully cultivate 60 000 vines on the farm. The farm was bought in 1929 by the Starke family and at that time only a small vineyard existed. As a consequence some of the wheat fields were replaced by vineyards in the early thirties and the first block of Shiraz was planted in 1932. However it took until 1969 before the first Meerendal Shiraz was bottled.
The unique location and terroir of Meerendal, in one of the coolest wine regions in the Western Cape, is ideal for the variety of noble cultivars that have been planted here: Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. A new vineyard of Pinot Noir has been established in 2008, while additional Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vineyards have been added in the past few years. The high quality of grapes produced, together with modern cellar techniques, ensures fine Meerendal Estate wines of excellent quality. Meerendal?s gracious Cape Dutch homestead, which has been extensively restored, is a landmark in the Durbanville area.
Meerendal is situated on the cool southeasterly slopes of the Tygerberg Hills near Durbanville which is only 15 kms from the cold Atlantic Ocean to the west. The noble varieties grown here include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
In the early days Meerendal used to have a big herd of cattle and the barn was used as a dairy. This has been beautifully renovated and is the perfect venue for an elegant dinner, special celebration or corporate event. For your wedding you can celebrate the day in the tranquil setting and exchange your vows in the quaint wooden, candle-lit chapel. Meerendal wine list includes:
