Lammershoek Wine Farm
Lammershoek means lambs corner, with the name originating from the fact that ewes with their young sought shelter in and around the forests that surround Lammershoek when they were threatened by the indigenous Black Eagle.
One of three farms in the Aprilskloof Valley of the Paardeberg was Lammershoek which was proclaimed in 1718, with the first of the vineyards being planted in 1750. Some of the oldest vines in SA are found at Lammershoek.
Lammershoek is a small family-run wine farm, which owner Paul Kretzel bought when he came to South Africa from Austria in 1976; Paul worked in the corporate world for 26 years before buying Lammershoek.
Lammershoek comprises100 hectare which is under vine, consisting mostly of old bush vines, and of particular interest is that presently Lammershoek is in the process of converting to organic production.
Lammershoek exports wines all over the globe and produces in the region of 10 to 12 000 cases every year. The grapes from Lammershoek are also sold to other wine producers the likes of Eben?s Palladius.
Activities:
Only wood and concrete are used at Lammershoek Wine Estate, and all the ferments are natural.
Lammershoek wine tasting is completely free and is available for tasting and purchasing at The Wine Kollective in Riebeek Kasteel.
