Knorhoek Wine Farm
It is believed that Martin Melck changed the name of Kleygat to Knorhoek Wines in 1793 (adapted from the saying ‘leeuwens knorren’, which means the place where lions growl). The area was wild in times gone by, but sadly the Cape Mountain Lion became extinct during the latter part of the 1700’s, although it is common to sight leopard and caracal on the farm, resulting in the leopard taking pride of place on the Knorhoek label.
Martin Melck’s daughter inherited Knorhoek and her son Jan Andries Beyers farmed on Knorhoek; In 1887 JGB van Niekerk bought a neighbouring farm and married the great-granddaughter of Beyers. Beyers bought back Knorhoek, and the farm has been in the family since.
The Van Niekerks have fashioned a fine equilibrium between producing outstanding wines and conserving a little of the untamed spirit of the past.
Activities on Knorhoek:
Fifth generation brothers, hot on the heels of successful winemaker father Hannes, who was awarded the impressive Smuts Trophy for his wine-making abilities, continue in the time-honoured family tradition of wine-making.
James is in charge of the vineyards whilst Hansie is solely responsible for winemaking and marketing, and together with their wives Carol and Ingrid, they form a vivacious young team and are thrilled to share their legacy with their guests.
There is a three star guesthouse available which serves guests delectable cuisine and there is also an outstanding venue for weddings and functions.
