Eagles? Nest Wine Farm
High up on the slopes of the Constantia Mountain Range and nestled in a private valley, you will find the Eagles’ Nest Wine Farm which is part of the World Heritage Site of Table Mountain. The farm’s history can easily be traced as far back as 1836, and was used as a half-way stop for travellers that had to cross Constantia Neck.
The survey beacon situated on the cliffs that rise high above the vineyards is aptly labelled Eagles’ Nest; 38 hectares was bought in 1984 by the Mylrea family. The terrifying and destructive fires almost destroyed the entire farm in 2000, with only the historic buildings left standing,
Eagles’ Nest vineyards were established in the aftermath of the fire in 2000 which destroyed most of the fynbos and natural vegetation on the farm, as well as 95% of the forestation, and the owners then made the decision of shifting the focus of the estate to wine. A decision was since made to plant the farm with varieties that are perfectly suited to the unique terroir of Eagles’ Nest.
Activities
Verreaux’s Eagles have made their nests on Table Mountain since the beginning of time and in the mid ‘50s there were no fewer than four breeding pairs on the Peninsula. Eagles’ Nest is committed to support the Western Cape Raptor Research Program in their efforts to conserve the last remaining nest. A programme is in place to encourage the awareness of eagle conservation which will hopefully educate the public when approaching the nesting site.
Table Mountain National Park is presently involved in environmental impact studies, and Eagles’ Nest is supporting and funding its construction. Future plans include establishing a webcam that can be used to monitor the nest 24/7.
