Doolhof Wine Farm
The name “Doolhof” simply means “The Valley of the Labyrinth”; a labyrinth, unlike a maze, has a single point of entry and exit.
Doolhof wine farm is situated amongst the hilly valleys of Wellington which is flanked by the Hawekwa, Liemitberge and Groenberg Ranges. The excellent soil in this fertile valley can be recognized in the brilliant wines that are produces on this estate.
Permits were granted from 1709 in this remote area, and in 1712 land was granted to individuals. From as early and 1728 the luscious grape vines were introduced for the production of fine brandies and wines.
Because the area is so remote and access is so intricate due to the positioning of the mountain ranges surrounding Doolhof wine farm, Geddes Bain built Bainskloof Pass in the 1840’s.
The farm has been the pride and joy of the Bovlei valley for centuries and boasts having had many owners over the years. The current farm was built in 1993, and the first vines of the recent vineyards were planted in 1995.
Today the farm proudly includes a winery, tasting room and a storage complex, and in 2005 Doolhof was granted Estate status.
The wonderful buildings that are steeped in an Old Cape Dutch history have been lovingly restored to its former glory which are surrounded by stunning landscaped gardens.
Current Activities
There is a wonderful new addition, the Grand Dédale Country House, which was opened in 2009 and boasts being the piece de resistance of Wellington, and is able to house 12 guests in no fewer than six double bedrooms that have been tastefully furnished, resulting in an elegant and sophisticated establishment. On offer is a separate further guest cottage.
Further attractions that Doolhof offer are a tasting room, light lunches, walks, and picnics.
