History of Domaine Des Deux
During the mid sixties, nephew and uncle team from the Beujard family, immigrated from the north of Africa to the Mosson Valley and founded the Garrique Vineyard of 2 Soleils. It was only in 1960 that the possibility of making this land viable for growing grapes came about with the assistance of heavy machinery.
Heavy labour was required in the creation of terraced vineyards and was hugely expensive compared to the easier cultivation in the valley below. Most of this soil has not been used previously, making it exceptionally fertile, as this is purely virgin soil.
High up on the hilly slopes, the vines enjoy perfect exposure to the sun right through the course of the day and at night the large white rocks retain the warmth from the sun, reflecting the warmth onto the grapes. 2 Soleil, according to the French describe this as “the grapes that grow between two suns. ”The main vineyard is situated in the Valley de la Mosson, which is north of Montpellier.
Current Activities of Domaine Des Deux:
Presently there are 20 Ha in production, and an extra 5 Ha is prepared for new planting. The average year of the vines is fifteen and the height of the vineyard is 100 à 200 m. The soil is primarily chalk, sand and cobblestones which lends itself perfectly to the growing of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The maturation period is 12 months in cuves and barriques.
First consultant winemaker Jean Francois Vrinat insists that the high quality of the wine begins with exceptional care in the vineyard, and has selected an environment-friendly semi-microbiological method of working with the vines.
Amongst the vines, spicy herbs are grown which attract a myriad of bees, butterflies, birds and wild life, such as wild boar. The wines are immediately recognizable by their exotically, distinct flavour. Both Cabernet and Merlot are excellent end-results of the chalky soil and the vines of Domain Des Deux Soleil have unusually long root systems as a result of the well-drained soil.
