Diemersfontein Wines
History of Diemersfontein
Diemersfontein has been the family farm of the Sonnenberg family from the early 1940?s. David Sonnenberg, the present owner?s grandfather purchased this magnificent 183 hectare farm which is overshadowed by the Hawekwa Mountains and overlooking Du Toits Kloof and Bain?s Kloof, is situated in the Wellington valley.
The main farmhouse is flanked by exquisite rose and azalea gardens which were designed by Cecilia Sonnenberg, and is a popular venue for weddings and other occasions.
During the war Italian prisoners-of-war were accommodated in the farm cottages, and Max Sonnenberg, co-founder of Woolworths SA and a parliament member of the then Smuts Government, used Sonnenberg as a peaceful retreat for his family.
Sonnenberg has always supported the arts, which was inspired by the Italian prisoners who enjoyed singing opera. David and Sue Sonnenberg, today?s present owners, support and encourage local artists.
The first vineyards were planted in the 1970?s by David?s father and in the year 2000 David built a cellar of his own and started the production of award-winning wines.
