DeMorgenzen Wines
DeMorgenzen, or “morning sun, boasts having a long and intricate history, and is so named because it is the first bit of the Stellenboschkloof valley that greets the sun due to its high altitude.
Simon van der Stel, Dutch Governor, founded Stellenbosch in the year 1679, and DeMorgenzen was portion of Uiterwyk, which is one of the original farms in SA. Uiterwyk was rented out to Dirk Cauchet, and was then granted to him by Willem Adriaan vd Stel, who was governor of The Cape in 1699.
The first vines in the Stellenbosch Hills were planted during the early 1700’s, which lends itself to excellent grape growing conditions.
Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum bought DeMorgenzon in 2003, turning it into a lucrative enterprise.
Current Activities
DeMorgenzen Vineyards have exquisite wild flowers growing amongst the grapes and stunning baroque music is piped throughout the vineyards, with the belief that beautiful music encourages loveliness and the ripening of the grapes, with the philosophy that if the environment is perceptive to the ecosystem, then this will have a wonderful end result on the fruit grown in this unusual vineyard.
DeMorgenzon crafts an outstanding wine and is really proud of the exceptional terroir and fruit combined with a sophisticated structure; a perfect marriage with new and old, resulting in De Morgenzon wines being simply wonderful.
