Beyerskloof Wines
Beyerskloof original name was Nooitgedacht and belonged to the Beyers family for 5 generations before Jan Andries Beyers sold it in 1895. Beyers Truter is a direct descendent of Jan Beyers and is the sixth generation to farm this land.
Beyers Truter of Kanonkop fame formed a partnership with four prominent wine lovers in Johannesburg in1988. He had one goal in mind, to produce an exceptional wine. He then explored the Cape Winelands for a suitable location they found the perfect place, a farm in the Koelenhof area within the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin region which has the best soil for producing a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine. Beyerskloof's shallow, gravely soil is very similar to that of Bordeaux and this led Beyers to plant almost 5 000 vines per hectare to optimise the small pocket of land. The vines are planted with 20 000 Cabernet Sauvignon vines and 5 000 Merlot vines.
Beyers Truter really wanted to study medicine and then he toyed with the idea of becoming a politician, he even tried his luck as a poet (South African musician Koos Kombuis recorded his Pinotage poem in 2009). He is convinced that it was the ?81 Kanonkop Cabernet that put him on the wine map. He received international acclaim (Pichon
Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy) for the Best Blended Red Wine in the world at the International Wine & Spirit Competition held annually in London.
Beyers Truter was a founding member of the Pinotage Assocation and is devoted to empowerment. Bouwland is one of the biggest agricultural empowerment ventures yet in the Cape?s wine industry.
The Beyers Truter Fetal Alcohol-Syndrome and Interrelated Treatment Help Fund is a new Section 21 company geared to tackle one of the most serious issues in the Winelands. At The Red Leaf Restaurant one can enjoy the calm and serene views across the rolling Boland vineyards and also enjoy great food and superior wines.
