Backsberg Estate Cellars
The family history of Michael Back began at the turn of the last century when his grandfather arrived on the shores of Cape Town as a penniless political and religious refugee from Lithuania.
In South Africa he started working as a dockhand on the reclamation program ? today known as the Waterfront, graduated to a bicycle delivery “boy” and finally bought a butcher shop in Paarl.
Someone arrived at the shop one morning and asked if he would be interested in buying a farm. As Mr Back thought this was an excellent idea, he sold the butcher shop to buy what is today known as
Backsberg Estate Cellars.
Wine making started in earnest in the early 20s and the wine was sold either to the KWV or in bulk to destinations in England. He was instrumental in shipping tankers of wine to France where there was a shortage after the 2nd World War.
In 1969 he sold the brand name of Backs Wines and then registered the name Backsberg and the peach orchards were replaced with vineyards over the next 10 years.
The Backsberg Restaurant serves up hearty, home-style meals - including ostrich carpaccio, smoked salmon stacks and seafood platters. Traditional lamb on the spit is available every day during summer, in a stunning, garden setting.

They will provide everything in line with your brief ? although only Backsberg Estate Cellars’ wines may be served at the function. And why not ? they are both elegant and delicious to drink.
